Moonvalley makes Marey, an AI video model the company markets as the first trained exclusively on licensed, high-resolution footage, no scraped web video, no user-generated uploads, no legal gray zone. Roughly 80% of the training data reportedly came from filmmakers and agencies who intentionally licensed footage rather than having it scraped. The pitch is “commercially safe” generative video for professional production, not a consumer toy.

Marey launched publicly on July 8, 2025, after a private beta with studios and agencies. Moonvalley has since raised $154M total (a ~$70M 2024 seed plus an $84M 2025 round led by General Catalyst, with CAA, Comcast Ventures, CoreWeave, Khosla Ventures, and Y Combinator participating), and struck a partnership with Adobe that put Marey inside Firefly Boards and Premiere Pro as a commercially safe partner model.

What it actually is

Marey is a text-to-video and image-to-video model built specifically to avoid the copyright and “trained on stolen art” controversy that follows most of the AI video field. Moonvalley says it licensed B-roll and archival footage directly from filmmakers, agencies, and platform partnerships (Vimeo has been named as a source) rather than scraping the open web. That licensing story is the product’s entire differentiator, not an afterthought.

On the creative-control side, Marey targets working directors rather than casual prompt-and-pray users: Camera Control turns a single 2D image into a moving 3D-feeling shot, Motion Transfer applies a reference performance video’s movement to a new subject, Trajectory Control moves objects naturally without needing a text prompt to describe the path, Pose Control reads a reference video for timing and body performance, and Keyframing blends multiple reference images into a smooth transition. Shot Extension lets a generated clip run longer without a fresh generation from scratch.

Distribution runs two tracks: Moonvalley’s own app (app.moonvalley.com) for subscription users, and inference leaves its waitlist. The Adobe Firefly and Premiere Pro integrations extend Marey’s reach into existing professional editing pipelines rather than asking filmmakers to adopt a new standalone tool.

When to pick Moonvalley

• Licensing and IP risk are dealbreakers. If legal, procurement, or a studio client will not sign off on a model trained on scraped data, Marey’s licensed-only claim is the differentiator that gets a deal through review.
• You need director-grade motion control, not just a text box. Trajectory, pose, and motion-transfer controls target the same workflow gap that Runway’s Act-Two and camera tools address, from a licensing-first vendor.
• You already work in Adobe Premiere Pro or Firefly Boards. The native panel and Firefly Boards listing mean Marey slots into an existing edit timeline instead of requiring a round trip to a separate app.
• Brand and agency work where “commercially safe” is a client requirement. Moonvalley leans hard into IP indemnification messaging aimed at exactly this buyer.

When to pick something else

• Cheapest or highest-volume clip generation: Kling or Hailuo. Both offer lower per-clip costs and, in Kling’s case, longer multi-shot output with native audio.
• Best raw model quality to test first: Seedance 2.0. Multimodal references, 15-second multi-shot audio-video output, and motion stability lead the current field on pure output quality.
• Full production workspace with editing, teams, and API today: Runway. Free tier, mature API, Aleph editing, Act-Two performance capture, and third-party model routing in one account.
• Cinematic camera language as the main hook: Luma Dream Machine with Ray3.2, or Higgsfield for character-consistent social and cinematic creative.
• Google-stack API and provenance requirements: Google Veo 3.1.

Pricing

Moonvalley does not publish Marey pricing on its public marketing site (moonvalley.com/marey has no pricing page or link). The numbers below come from Moonvalley’s own help-center article, “What are the costs and subscription options for using Marey to generate videos,” which returned a 403 to automated fetch tools during this review. They are cross-verified against multiple independent secondary sources (escapism.ai, oreateai.com, and others) reporting identical figures, so treat this as corroborated-but-not-primary-confirmed:

There is no free plan. Clips are capped at 5 seconds per generation at 24fps, in line with other publicly available video models at this tier. Cancel-anytime, no long-term contract, based on secondary reporting.
