That matters because Cowork is not just a chat surface. Microsoft describes it as an agent that can work across Microsoft 365 under user control. - Copilot Cowork is generally available. Microsoft published the GA announcement on June 16, 2026.

Microsoft Agent Framework can still be the developer layer. Copilot Cowork and Work IQ are different buyer surfaces: workplace agent distribution, tenant context, and paid execution.
That distinction matters. A proof of concept can look cheap when it only counts developer time. Production can become expensive when the agent grounds in Microsoft 365 data, reasons through Work IQ, runs tools, and spends minutes on user-directed tasks.
Before teams mix custom agents, Cowork, and Work IQ, ask:
- Which framework code is ours, and which Microsoft service is metered?
- Which tasks can be handled by deterministic workflow automation instead of frontier reasoning?
- Which prompts, files, chats, meetings, and mailboxes become part of the context boundary?
- Can administrators audit task history, model route, data retrieval, and tool use after the fact?
- What is the fallback if a lower-cost model route is not good enough for high-risk work?
