Google rebuilds Android around Gemini Intelligence and launches Googlebook AI laptops with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo

At the Android Show: I/O Edition on May 12, Google reframed Android as an 'intelligence system' powered by Gemini, demoed Gemini Intelligence performing cross-app multi-step tasks, and announced Googlebook, a new premium laptop category built around Gemini with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo as launch hardware partners. Googlebook ships this fall.

Google used the Android Show: I/O Edition on May 12, 2026 to do two things that have been telegraphed for months and are now official: reposition Android as an “intelligence system” powered by Gemini, and launch Googlebook, a new premium laptop category built from the ground up around Gemini Intelligence.

Sameer Samat, who runs Google’s Android ecosystem, told CNBC that Google is “transitioning from an operating system to an intelligence system.” The demo flow showed Gemini Intelligence reading the screen, moving across apps, and completing multi-step tasks, building a shopping cart, booking a reservation, drafting and sending a follow-up, without the user switching between apps manually. App-automation features roll out in waves starting summer 2026 on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones, then expanding across more Android devices including watches, cars, glasses, and laptops later this year.

Googlebook is the headline new product. It is Google’s first premium laptop class built specifically for Gemini, designed in partnership with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Key features announced:

  • Magic Pointer, wiggle the cursor over content and Gemini surfaces contextual actions (pull a date out of an email and create a calendar event, select two images and see them composited together).
  • Create your Widget, prompt Gemini to assemble custom widgets that combine Gmail, Calendar, web content, and other Google apps into a single personalized dashboard.
  • Glowbar, an exterior light bar described as “both functional and beautiful,” likely surfacing Gemini state and notifications when the lid is closed.

Googlebook ships this fall. Google has not published pricing or named the first SKU per partner.

Why this matters

This is Google’s most explicit response to Apple’s AI roadmap. Bloomberg’s framing, “to counter MacBook Neo”, captures the dynamic: Apple is broadly expected to ship a major AI reboot across the Mac line this year, and Google does not want to cede the premium AI-PC narrative the way it ceded the original Chromebook positioning to the budget K-12 market.

It is also a structural pivot for Android. Android has historically been a permissive platform, many OEMs, many skins, broad pricing range, modest first-party hardware. Gemini Intelligence reverses the polarity: the value moves from the OS layer into a Google-controlled assistant layer that requires consistent on-device compute and Google service integration. That changes what an OEM needs to build, and it changes which OEMs Google needs to keep close. Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo span the global premium-PC market; Samsung is the conspicuous absence from the Googlebook launch list, despite being the phone launch partner.

For the Chromebook line, this is a slow squeeze. Chromebooks are not gone, but Googlebook is the new tip of the spear. Expect Chromebook positioning to drift further toward education and budget tiers while Googlebook eats the premium and prosumer segments.

Buyer take

If you buy fleet laptops, do not refresh in the next six months without rethinking the AI tier. Three specific questions to put to Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo reps:

  • Which Gemini features are on-device vs. cloud. Magic Pointer’s responsiveness suggests local inference. Confirm what runs offline, what requires a Google account in good standing, and what gets degraded when the device is air-gapped.
  • Enterprise management and data controls. Gemini Intelligence reads screen content. For regulated industries (healthcare, legal, finance), the policy questions about screen-read scope, data retention, and tenant isolation matter more than the demo flair.
  • Total cost of ownership. Googlebook is positioned premium. The fall-2026 launch will land into a market where MacBook Neo, Copilot+ PCs, and dedicated AI-laptop SKUs from every OEM are competing for the same budget. Wait for actual SKU pricing before committing.

For Android-first developers, the Gemini Intelligence agent surface is the new platform target. App actions that can be invoked by Gemini will be discoverable in ways that traditional Play Store listings are not. Building first-class Gemini intents will become a SEO-equivalent investment.

What is still unclear

Google has not published Googlebook pricing, exact ship dates per OEM, the on-device chip requirements, or the size of the model that runs locally vs. in the cloud. The privacy and data-handling story around Gemini Intelligence reading screen content across apps has not been fully addressed, the demo emphasized convenience, not the policy framework. The relationship between Googlebook and ChromeOS is also undefined: Google has not said whether Googlebook ships ChromeOS, Android-on-PC, or a new derivative.
